Wintery Wisley
Days out

A Wintery walk around Wisley

With the promise of sunshine the other week, we drove to Wisley to get some fresh air and see the butterflies in the greenhouse. My dad, who is a bit of a wildlife fan also ventured out with us. I was hoping to get some photos of the butterflies in the greenhouse and know the children enjoy the freedom there. It was a very wintery walk around the gardens. All the ponds and streams were frozen, apart from the parts in the January sun.

Wisley is a great place to visit at any time of the year, as there is always so much to see and with the different seasons it brings the different plants and exhibits there.

This time there was an exhibit of caterpillars and butterflies all around the gardens. Even the ginger breads in the cafes were in the shapes of these, and pretty tasty from the way Charley wolfed hers down.

This time we got to see Wisley frosty and frozen, with the ducks and swans standing on the icy ponds, their reflections on the ice making it look like they were standing on stones in the water.

We’d pre-booked our butterfly session this time so we didn’t have to queue with two little ones, not that there seemed to be a queue anyway.

It felt lovely and tropical in the butterfly part of the greenhouse and I was glad we had left our coats on the pushchair outside.

I don’t know how many butterflies they have at any one time but its quite a spacious area so it doesn’t feel like they are constantly flying round your head. Some are quite large and allΒ very pretty. We saw one sitting on a ladies hat and one even sat on my dads glove for a little bit. Others were on the fruit that have around the greenhouse on the tables.

After all the dreary weather recently it was lovely to be out in the air and to take some (ok a lot!) of photos with the sun out.

Here are some of my photos from our day out:

  1. What a great day out for you all, it’s fab that you managed to make the most of a little bit of the winters sun we’ve finally been having. I bet the swans were put out by the frozen water on the lakes, I wonder if they slip over like we do. Charley and Bodhi look like they’re having a great time exploring the gardens and the butterfly house. Thanks for linking up with me on #CountryKids.

  2. Ah this looks lovely, we have been a few times but not in the winter – I think our membership runs out in Feb so we are going to try and sneak in another visit. For some reason I didn’t know there was a butterfly house there, so we’ll try and find it next time! Becky x #KCACOLS

  4. Aw this looks like such a fun day out. I bet you were glad to get undercover in that tropical butterfly area! Although it looks as though you had some fab weather. We’ve been to a couple of NT places recently and it’s been horrid! The weather can make such a difference although I hate to say it #KCACOLS x

  5. What lovely pictures. Looks like you caught a fabulous day of sunshine there. We loved Wisley, have only been the once as it’s a little far for us but we really had a good day. We have had RHS membership for a few years and go quite often to Hyde Hall Gardens which is much closer. My daughter absolutely loves it there and they have so much for the kids to do. Must try and get back to Wisley again this year. #KCACOLS

  6. This looks like such a fun day out – a trip to the Wisley butterflies has been on our list for ages but it’s a really long way from us and we haven’t made it yet. The grounds look absolutely stunning too, although the idea of staying in the cosy greenhouse sounds tempting πŸ™‚

  7. It looks like an amazing place to explore and loads to see even in winter! I love seeing butterflies, it’s amazing when there are so many fluttering around especially if they land on you too. The caterpillar and butterfly cookies look delicious too!

  8. Wow all of your photos are absolutely stunning. The light is incredible and the sun just makes the winter scene look even more beautiful. The butterfly chair is so cool! This looks like an amazing place to visit all year around, I bet in summer when it’s all in bloom it’s so beautiful, but even now at this time of year it’s really enchanting. What a cool experience. The cookies look delicious too. Thank you so much for sharing with #whatevertheweather xx
